Every one of us irrespective of our paths faces challenges sometimes shaking the very foundation of our faith and understanding.
These challenges, though real and tangible, often cloud our perception of the greater reality that lies beyond our sight. Allow me to share a personal story.Today, I want to journey with you through the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:16–18. It’s a passage that illuminates the promise of strength found not in our temporal struggles but in the eternal truths of God.
As we delve into this message, let’s open our hearts to the profound realization of finding strength not just in what we see, but in the boundless promise of the eternal.
Not Losing Heart
In the midst of our human experience, feelings of despair and discouragement are not uncommon. As Paul pens the words in 2 Corinthians 4:16–18, he speaks to a universal sentiment: the weariness of our outer self contrasted with the relentless renewal of our inner self.
He writes, “So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Imagine that soaring high above our problems, not bogged down by them but elevated, given a perspective that sees beyond the immediate.
In the face of life’s whirlwinds, we are called to remember that our temporal struggles don’t define our story. Instead, it’s the unwavering hope in the Lord, the constant renewal of our spirit, and our gaze fixed on the eternal truths that truly shape our narrative.
Inward Renewal Amid Outward Decay
In our human journey the inevitable reality of physical decay is omnipresent. As days roll into years, we witness the signs of aging and the wear and tear of life. The strength we once took for granted might wane, and the vigor of youth gradually dims. Even as the outer shell displays the marks of time, there exists within us a spirit, an essence, ever vibrant and continually rejuvenated.
The psalmist beautifully captures this dichotomy in Psalm 73:26: “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” While our bodies might show the weariness of life’s battles, our souls when anchored in God, find an inexhaustible source of strength. God isn’t just a bystander in our journey; He is the very core and the sustenance of our being.
Now, while the external world showcases entropy and decline, the soul, when aligned with God, experiences a refreshment that defies logic. Psalm 103:5, paints a vibrant picture of this dynamic, proclaiming that God “satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”
Just as the majestic eagle soars high above, rising on the thermals, its vision sharp, its strength undiminished, so too can our spirits experience a resurgence, a renewal that transcends the physical.
The Scriptures emphasize a profound truth: our physical circumstances, though real, are not the entirety of our existence. At the heart of our being, where our true essence resides, there’s an opportunity for daily renewal, a chance to tap into a strength and vitality that is not of this world but is a gift from the Divine.
In moments of weakness, when the world seems overwhelming, it’s this inner rejuvenation, this God-given vitality, that propels us forward, ever onward toward our eternal home.
Light and Momentary Troubles

Troubles whether they be health-related, relational, financial or existential, have a way of magnifying in our immediate perception, often casting shadows that can feel overwhelming. Paul in his wisdom, termed these challenges as “light and momentary troubles.” At first glance, one might find this description to be dismissive, especially when in the throes of a storm. However, the intent is far from it.

In Psalm 34:17-18, we find an assurance that’s both comforting and empowering: “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” It’s a testament to God’s unwavering presence, even in the throes of our darkest moments.

While on the surface they may seem like senseless sufferings, in the broader tapestry of eternity, they are contributing to a glorious outcome, a splendor that far transcends the temporal.
Paul in his epistle to the Romans, offers a perspective that resounds with hope and purpose. He writes in Romans 8:18, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.” This is not an attempt to belittle or dismiss our pain but rather to elevate our viewpoint. When we juxtapose our momentary struggles with the boundless glory of eternity, the scales of comparison tip overwhelmingly in favor of the latter.
It’s a reminder that the weight of our current sorrows, no matter how heavy, pales in comparison to the joy and splendor that awaits.
Building on this theme of endurance and its ensuing reward, Paul again in 2 Timothy 4:7-8, recounts his personal journey and its culmination: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.”

With eyes of faith, we can look beyond the immediate, beyond the discomforts and disappointments and see a horizon radiant with promise and eternal splendor. And in this vision, we find the strength to endure, to press on, knowing that our temporal trials are forging in us an eternal treasure.

In the cacophony of life’s challenges, it’s natural to become enmeshed in the immediacy of our situations, letting fleeting concerns consume our thoughts and energies. However, an essential aspect of our Christian journey is developing the ability to discern between what is temporary and what holds eternal significance.

While it’s essential to address our earthly responsibilities and challenges, it’s equally crucial to ensure these don’t overshadow the eternal promise that we have in Christ. In an era saturated with technology, visual stimuli and a plethora of immediate concerns, it’s easier than ever to become engrossed in what is directly in front of us. The tangible world, with its alluring attractions and pressing concerns, often monopolizes our attention. Yet, as believers we are called to a higher vision, to lift our eyes above the transient and anchor them on the eternal.
Consider a ship navigating the vast ocean. Though waves might crash against it and winds might divert its course, its compass remains fixed on its true North. Similarly, we must set our spiritual compass towards the heavenly realms, regardless of life’s tumults. Intentionally focusing on the eternal amidst our daily distractions requires conscious effort. It’s more than a fleeting thought; it’s a lifestyle choice, a daily commitment.
To foster this mindset, begin each day by dedicating a quiet moment to meditation and prayer, reaffirming your commitment to seeking God’s kingdom above all. Visual reminders, like scripture cards placed in strategic locations around your home or workspace, can serve as prompts throughout the day to refocus your attention.
Engage in conversations that elevate rather than bring down, seeking out fellowship with those who share this eternal perspective.
Paul’s words in Colossians 3:2, resonates profoundly in this context: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” This isn’t merely a suggestion; it’s an exhortation, a vital strategy for spiritual well-being. However, as noted in Hebrews 11:27, “By faith he (Moses) left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.” Moses wasn’t merely guided by the immediate reality of liberating the Israelites; he was motivated by a deeper divine vision of God’s eternal promises.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” This “cloud of witnesses” refers to the lineage of faith-filled men and women, like Moses, whose lives exemplify unwavering trust in God’s eternal promises.
